The City of Andover reports over 700 volunteers turned out in the first cleanup activity for neighborhoods affected by the April 29th tornado. The volunteers turned out for a day of work on Tuesday, then rainy weather put the efforts on hold for two days. Volunteers returned to the area on Friday, and another work day will be held Saturday. There will not be a volunteer work day on Sunday, May 8th. Volunteers can sign up at the Andover United Methodist Church at 1429 North Andover Road.
Financial help, supplies and services are available for tornado victims at the Andover Community Center, which has been set up as a residential disaster assistance center. Victims must register with the United Way of the Plains and the American Red Cross to be eligible for funds that are being donated to help the community. Victims can also call the United Way help line at 211. The assistance center will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through May 15th. Residents will also need to visit the center if they need volunteers to help with cleaning up their properties. The center is located at 1008 East 13th.
Andover officials say cash is the greatest need for storm victims and donations can be made through the United Way of the Plains. Clothing and household items can be taken to Goodwill locations and food donations should be made by calling the Kansas Food Bank (316-265-3663) or the Andover Food Bank (316-733-1644).
