Man shot by officer during disturbance in Harper County

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is looking into an officer-involved shooting that happened Friday in Harper.

The KBI said a man was seen damaging property at an apartment complex in Harper around 3:30 p.m.   An officer saw the man standing in the doorway of an apartment, and as the officer approached, the man tried to slam the door.  The officer pushed his way into the apartment and got into a struggle with the man.   The officer used pepper spray on the man but he approached the officer with a knife.  The officer fired a shot and struck the 61-year-old man in the right arm.

The officer backed out of the apartment and the man locked the door.  Other officers arrived along with Harper County deputies, and they forced their way into the apartment.  They took the man into custody after a brief struggle.

The man was taken to a local hospital and later transferred to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita for surgery.   He was in good condition.   No law enforcement officers were injured.

The KBI will investigate and submit a report to the Harper County Attorney.
