Kansas Senator Jerry Moran says he is committed to working with the Senate Judiciary Committee and others to protect and empower athletes from abuse. Moran spoke at a committee hearing on an Inspector General’s report that the Federal Bureau of Investigation failed to act on information that Dr. Larry Nassar was abusing athletes in USA Gymnastics.
Moran said, “One question that stuck with me since the very beginning of our investigation was, ‘Why was there more than one? During the course of our investigation, we uncovered evidence that the FBI received credible information of the dangers Nassar posed to athletes, yet did not appear to take additional actions.”
Moran said he will work to be certain that FBI agents are held accountable for their actions. He said the goals should remain to hold accountable the people responsible for these crimes and to make certain that future generations of athletes can train, compete and succeed without fear of abuse.
From the Associated Press:
Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles has told Congress that the FBI and gymnastics officials turned a “blind eye” to USA Gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar’s sexual abuse of her and hundreds of other women.
Biles told the Senate Judiciary Committee Wednesday that “enough is enough” as she and three other U.S. gymnasts spoke in stark emotional terms about the lasting toll Nassar’s crimes have taken on their lives.
The hearing is part of a congressional effort to hold the FBI accountable after multiple missteps in investigating the case – including the delays that allowed Nassar to abuse additional young gymnasts.
