Collapsing storm brings ‘severe’ winds before dawn Tuesday

A brief thunderstorm labeled as severe rolled across Wichita early Tuesday morning.

It wasn’t a traditional severe storm, with large hail or big red splotches on the weather radar. Instead, a collapsing thunderstorm poured out wind across parts of Sedgwick and Butler Counties. A gust measured 58 miles an hour at Eisenhower National Airport. Winds that strong one of the criteria for a severe storm.

No major damage has been reported from those strong winds, but a power outage hit the North Riverside area right as the storm was moving through the city between 4 and 5 a.m. Power was restored just before 6 a.m.

If you come across any storm damage, you can submit a quick report to the National Weather Service. Click here to find out how.
