Grass fires break out across south central Kansas

Crews in Sedgwick and Butler counties were dealing with grass fires Wednesday afternoon as a high fire danger continued across the area.

A grass fire broke out around 2:30 p.m. along the Sedgwick-Butler County line south of K-254 and crews were working along Andover Road throughout the afternoon.  Some power lines were down and power poles were damaged by the fire, but there were no reports of homes or structures being threatened in that area south of Benton.    Crews continued to look for hot spots into the evening.    There was a structure fire south of Andover, but there were no reports of injuries.

A grass fire at 71st Street South and 135th Street West kept Sedgwick County crews busy for a couple of hours.   The fire was contained by late afternoon.

A fire warning was issued for southern Elk County because of a large wildfire that was being pushed to the north by gusty winds.    Officials were calling for voluntary evacuations in a rural area near Elk Falls.

A Red Flag Warning was in effect for south central Kansas through 7 p.m.   Showers and storms were in the forecast for late Thursday to bring needed moisture to the area.
