An inmate at the Hutchinson Correctional Facility died at a hospital after falling ill.

48-year-old Charles Beck, Junior  of Derby was serving a hard-25 sentence plus 165 months for convictions in Sedgwick and Russell counties.  He had been convicted in Sedgwick County of first degree murder and attempted first degree murder.   In Russell County he was convicted for violation of a protective order, battery of a correctional officer, and drug possession.

Beck pleaded guilty in 2014 to the murder of his girlfriend and the attempted murder of her 15-year-old son.   44-year-old Lonnie Staggs was found dead in her Derby home on September 1st, 2014.   Her son ran to a bedroom and locked himself inside, saving himself and his sister.

A press release from the Kansas Department of Corrections said Beck’s death is under investigation, but it is not believed to be related to COVID-19.   Beck had been transported to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, and he died Friday.
