Wichita police released 911 recordings and some video outlining the situation Monday evening when two officers shot a woman who had been pointing a gun at people in an east side store.
Police Captain Jason Stephens said a security officer and a store manager called 911 from Whole Foods at 13th and Webb Road around 8:15 p.m. They described a woman in her 30s, wearing black clothing, walking in and out of the store, and she was seen pointing a gun at windows in the store. Stephens said there was information provided later that the woman pointed a gun at least three people, and demanded car keys from one of them.
Stephens said two officers approached the store and saw the woman with a handgun, at times pointing it in the officers’ direction. The officers gave a number of commands for her to drop the gun, but she retreated back into the store. As officers approached, the woman fired a shot at the officers, and they returned fire, each officer firing six shots. The officers gave the woman medical treatment and she was taken to a hospital.
The woman was released from the hospital Tuesday afternoon and she has been booked into jail on three counts of aggravated assault, two counts of aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, and aggravated robbery. She was identified as 31-year-old Danielle Robinson, who is believed to be from the Salina area.
Stephens said the woman was seen drinking alcohol and police are looking at possible drug use.
The two officers were placed on paid administrative leave, under standard WPD policy. One is a 19-year-veteran of the department and the other is an 8-year veteran. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation will be looking into the shooting. Police are continuing their investigation of the Whole Foods incident and information will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office for the filing of formal charges.
No civilians or officers were injured. Captain Stephens said the staff at Whole Foods did an outstanding job in looking out for their customers and employees. They were taken to a back part of the store during the incident. Stephens said he believes the actions of the store management did save lives.
