The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Chill Warning for Kansas through noon Tuesday, with north winds bringing wind chills to -30.
Temperature readings were below zero throughout the morning with Wichita reaching -3 at noon. The low is expected to be -10 and record cold temperatures are expected in Kansas and across much of the Plains and the Midwest, even into the Southern states.
Light snow was falling in the Wichita area Monday morning into the afternoon. Another round of snow is expected in south central Kansas Tuesday with snow showers in the afternoon, and light snow is expected Tuesday night. The Wichita area is expected to see a trace to an inch of snow, with amounts ranging from 1 to 3 inches in southeast Kansas.
Crews for the city of Wichita and the Kansas Department of Transportation were continuing to plow major streets and highways. Tom Hein with the KDOT office in Wichita said temperatures were too cold for crews to treat the roads, so they have been plowing. He said even if a lane looks clear, there could still be icy spots and there have been a number of accidents and slide-offs on Kellogg and the interstate highways. Hein said people should slow down and drive according to conditions.
