In an effort to stop drugs from making it into the jail, the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office will no longer allow personal mail to be sent to inmates.
The jail contracts with Securus Technologies for a lot of services, and they will handle this too. Starting immediately, mail to an inmate should be addressed as shown below. Letters and photos will be scanned and delivered to inmates electronically. Personal mail sent to the jail after February 1 will be returned to the sender.
The Sheriff’s Office provided the following instructions:
The Inmate’s Name and Booking Number must be clearly printed on the outside of the envelope or postcard to ensure the mail is sent to the correct inmate account. All inmate postal mail will be scanned into the system and available to the inmates to view via the inmate kiosk.
Legal mail, books, and magazines subscriptions will need to continue to be sent to the Sheriff’s Office at 141 W. Elm Wichita, KS 67203.
Legal mail must be clearly identifiable and marked appropriately as legal mail. Legal mail will follow current guidelines of being verified, delivered, and opened in front of the inmate. Books and magazine subscriptions must come directly from the publisher.
This new system will not create any additional costs for taxpayers, inmates, or their families.
