Plans moving forward for new medical school in Wichita

A proposed new medical school in Wichita has been accepted as a candidate for accreditation.   That’s a big step forward for the development of the proposed Kansas Health Science Center and Kansas College of Osteopathic Medicine.

The school is under construction at the former State Office Building in downtown Wichita.  Dr. Tiffany Masson, president of the KHSC, said work is underway to assess health needs of Kansas and the school plans to address a shortage of doctors in the state.

The Center has been granted candidate status from the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation.   Dr. Masson said the next step is to apply for pre-accreditation status.

The medical school is part of a complex that will cover an entire block of downtown Wichita, and there are plans for student housing and a culinary school.  The plan also calls for the Broadway Plaza building to be renovated into a hotel with 119 rooms.
