Laura Kelly Signs Bill for $90 Million in School Funding

Laura Kelly signed a bill pumping an additional $90 million dollars per year into Kansas schools today. The bill was passed by the state Senate Thursday and will also increase the funding every year for the next four years. An attempt to satisfy a state Supreme Court mandate to increase school funding, the state Senate approved the funding in exchange for several education policy changes favored by GOP lawmakers. “After a significant increase in funding last year, this plan addresses the Kansas Supreme Court ruling and represents what we all hope to be the final step towards fully funding our schools – and maintaining adequate funding in the years to come,” Kelly said. Many teachers and education officials gathered in Topeka on Saturday to watch the bill be signed into law. USD 259 in Wichita plans to use the additional funds to increase third grade reading proficiency and provide more opportunities for students to complete college coursework.
